The Venus of Willendorf is an ancient ‘Mother Goddess’ figurine - said to have been created during the European Upper Paleolithic or "Old Stone Age" – dating around 30, 000 BCE. In August of 1908 this beautiful figurine was discovered by Johann Veran - during an archeological excavation in Willendorf, a small village located in Southern Austria. The original Venus of Willendorf was created from a form of limestone called oolitic and pigmented with red ochre.
There have been many similar figurines of the ‘Mother Goddess’ discovered around the world - each including large breasts and a protruding vulva - ancient symbols of fertility, power and the life-giving force which all women hold. The Venus of Willendorf illustrates the beauty and abundance the Mother Goddess bestows upon the world. Because of the unique design of the Venus of Willendorf, many archeologists believe that the figurine may have been an ancient fertility icon and/or a figurine of the Great Mother Goddess – a subject today that is under much speculation. The Venus of Willendorf is currently located at the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria.
